Fight for Cape Lookout is dedicated to fighting the ill-conceived plan that will place unnecessary and burdensome regulations on the access and use of off-road vehicles on our Cape Lookout National Seashore. The movement believes these regulations will significantly impact the economy of Carteret County as a whole, and will have a devastating impact on the economy of the Down East communities of Davis, Smyrna, Harker’s Island, and Cedar Island.
Cape Lookout National Seashore
Cape Lookout National Seashore is located on the North Carolina's Outer banks. It consists of 3 main undeveloped barrier islands, Shackleford Banks, Cape Lookout, and Portsmouth Island, that stretch over 55 miles. The Cape Lookout National Seashore is only accessible by boat therefore there are several ferry services that offer transportation to and from the islands. The islands are known for their unique fishing, hiking, and camping experiences. While there are no paved roads or trails for vehicles, they are permitted in certain sections of the park.
Shackleford Banks is known best for its wild horses that roam freely on the island. Shackleford also offers miles of beach for shelling, fishing, bird watching, and hiking.
Cape Lookout is known for the beautiful Cape Lookout Lighthouse, also called the Diamond Lady, located on the south most part of the island. The lighthouse has been standing watch for over a century. Cape Lookout has designated camp grounds to further visitors true nature experience.
Portsmouth Island was an bustling village more than a century ago. Today it stands deserted leaving a window into the islands history. Tours of the island are available and the ranger station is located on Portsmouth. Camping and fishing are allowed on the island but on the shore and away form the historic village.
